Durable AI Agents: Your iPhone now has a long memory

You know those AI assistants that forget everything the moment you close the app? Well, a "durable AI agent" is the exact opposite. It's a program that maintains its "memory" and state over time, even if you turn it off and back on.

This means it can carry out complex tasks for days or weeks. You don't have to repeat everything from scratch each time. Finn Voorhees developed PiDurableKit to bring durable AI agents to Apple platforms.

The trick is using JavaScriptCore, a JavaScript engine already neatly integrated into every iPhone, iPad, or Mac. PiDurableKit leverages JavaScriptCore, a JavaScript engine integrated into Apple operating systems, to run AI agents.

This kit allows developers to use a Swift API to build agents that maintain state on iPhones and other Apple devices. No need to install weird stuff; it works with what's already there. It's a clever way to add persistent intelligence without bogging down the system.

Simple: your AI apps will become far more useful and less frustrating. Imagine an assistant helping you plan a trip, remembering exactly where you left off last week. No more "let's start over, please."

This opens the door to a host of new, smarter applications. PiDurableKit, available on GitHub, is the foundation for apps that can manage complex background tasks, remembering every step. It's a leap forward for "personal" AI on our devices. Who knew your iPhone would develop a better memory than yours?
