Anthropic Hobbles Its Most Powerful AI: No Hacking Allowed

Mythos is a beast: an AI model capable of things its predecessors wouldn't dare attempt. Too good at things, really. Earlier this year, Anthropic put out the warning: this model could spot and exploit security holes in critical systems. The kind of thing that keeps CISOs awake at three in the morning. Instead of burying it, they decided to release a version with all the cybersecurity chops surgically removed — neutered, if we're being honest.

It's a smart move, in its way. You hand researchers the model without the ability to weaponize it against other people's systems. Obviously, it's a compromise between openness and common sense. Not like releasing the whole thing — that would've been reckless — but not quite locking everything in a vault either.

Here's where it gets interesting, though: how hard is it actually to disable a capability in an AI model? If you know what you're doing, workarounds exist. It's like giving someone a car with the accelerator hidden under the dashboard — technically off-limits, but the mechanic two blocks over might have different ideas. Security through limitation is fragile, especially when you're the thing being limited — you know how you work inside.

Anthropic says the model remains brutally powerful at everything else: coding, research, analysis, the legitimate stuff. This isn't a 'no to AI' moment — it's a 'yes, but with one hand tied behind its back' moment. The real test is whether this boundary holds once it's out in the wild, away from the lab's watchful eye.

The underlying message is decent, though: acknowledging the risk and doing something about it beats the alternative of hoping everything works out fine. It's not perfect — security rarely is — but at least someone's thinking about it instead of crossing their fingers.
