China EVs: Shorter Lifespan Than Your Phone?

Chinese electric vehicles are apparently champions of early retirement, but not in the way you might imagine. On average, these EVs are a mere 1.8 years old on the country's roads. It makes you wonder about the market's speed, or perhaps, consumers' constant desire for the latest thing.

This peculiar statistic comes from a joint analysis by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Hejun Consulting. Their report, cited by the 21st Century Business Herald, reveals a reality quite different from gasoline-powered cars. Traditional combustion cars, for example, cruise Chinese roads with an average age of 8.2 years. Quite a gap, wouldn't you say?

There are several theories, and not all are particularly flattering for the planet. One explanation could be the relentless pursuit of the newest model: Chinese consumers might be changing EVs as often as they upgrade their smartphones. Every year, something "newer," "more powerful" arrives, and the old model is forgotten, or worse, junked.

Alternatively, it could be a quality issue. If an EV lasts less, perhaps its components, especially the batteries, degrade quickly. Or maybe, the Chinese market is simply so vast and rapidly expanding that older vehicles are replaced by newer ones at a breakneck pace. China has seen a massive push in EV production and adoption in recent years, contributing to such a low average age.
