Copilot Chat: Switch AI Models On The Fly in VSCode

Until yesterday, using Copilot Chat in VSCode meant you were pretty much stuck with Microsoft's default AI model. This new project, routeVSCODE, decided that wasn't acceptable anymore, letting you swap AIs on the fly.

Picture having a universal remote for your AI. This tool does just that: it intercepts Copilot Chat's requests and reroutes them to your preferred model. You can switch from an OpenAI model to Claude, or even something running on your own PC.

The routeVSCODE project, created by yudaprasetya007 and available on GitHub, was first released on May 8, 2024, immediately offering the ability to switch AI models within VSCode.

The answer is simple: flexibility and control. Not all AIs are created equal for every task. Maybe for writing code you want one thing, for commenting it another, and for keeping you company when you're stuck, well, yet another.

Developers can test different AI models to see which performs best on specific tasks, without wasting time on restarts. This also means leveraging local models, potentially saving on costly cloud API calls.

In a world where a new 'revolutionary model' pops up daily, having the freedom to try them without dismantling half your system is a definite plus. After all, who doesn't want a little more control in their dev environment?
