Exxon in Azerbaijan: fracking for shale oil and gas

Simple: to find more oil and gas, obviously. The Texas giant ExxonMobil just signed an agreement with Azerbaijan to extract hydrocarbons from shale fields. A nice way to broaden their horizons, or perhaps just to avoid running dry.

The move is clear: ExxonMobil Holdings Corp. is taking its famous, or infamous, fracking expertise overseas. The goal? To get its hands on the oil and natural gas reserves hidden in the Middle Kura Basin, an area that looks promising for those brave enough to drill deep.

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is that process where liquids are injected underground at high pressure to break rocks and release oil and gas. It's a controversial technique, we know that well, but super effective for accessing otherwise unreachable resources.

For Exxon, it means tapping into significant new energy sources. Azerbaijan, for its part, gets a partner with the technology and capital needed to exploit complex fields. A win-win, you might say, where everyone gets something: money and resources on one side, expertise and access on the other.

Well, for us ordinary folks, every new oil or gas field means the world will keep depending on fossil fuels. For a while. ExxonMobil signed the deal with Azerbaijan for the shale fields in the Middle Kura Basin. This reinforces Azerbaijan's position as a global supplier.

In an era of energy transition, seeing a titan like Exxon still betting so heavily on "old" shale oil makes you wonder. Are we really moving towards a greener future, or are we just shifting the drilling rigs around? The question remains open.
