Data Centers Are Booming, but There Aren't Enough Workers to Build Them

Benoit Bazin, CEO of Saint-Gobain (the company that makes construction materials and glass), just spilled the beans to Bloomberg: North America is already hitting a labor wall. Data centers are multiplying like rabbits thanks to the endless hunger for AI infrastructure, but finding enough workers, technicians, and engineers is becoming the new headache for builders.

To grasp how serious this is: building a data center isn't like assembling an Ikea shelf. You need specific skills, speed, and a stable, trained workforce. Meanwhile, basically every major tech player is dumping billions into expanding AI infrastructure, creating a brutal competition for every available worker on the market.

The situation in the US is already tight, but the real warning bell is ringing for Europe. Bazin warns that the same problem is heading our way, just as the old continent is trying to accelerate on AI and tech independence. Translation: Europe will face the same bottleneck in a year or two, probably when it's even worse.

The irony is almost funny: we have enough technology, enough money, enough urgency and strategy. What we're missing is actual people who know how to assemble concrete, cables, and servers. This isn't something you improvise, and it's not a skill you learn in three weeks on an online course.

This means the global AI timeline could shift, at least when it comes to physical infrastructure. It's not a technology problem—it's a problem of bricks, sweat, and resumes. Saint-Gobain, which sells the materials to build all this stuff, has a front-row seat to how serious the labor shortage is becoming. And if they're saying it, it's probably not hype.
