Weapons Manufacturing Goes Global: Anduril's European Pivot

Brian Schimpf, CEO of Anduril Industries, told Bloomberg that his company would "absolutely" consider building its next weapons manufacturing facility outside the United States. He wasn't throwing this out casually — he said it on the record at the Founders Forum in the UK, to actual journalists, so odds are he meant it.

The logic is straightforward: Europe has serious manufacturing talent. We're not talking about outsourcing smartphone production here — we're talking about facilities for defense systems and autonomous weapons. Until very recently, this kind of stuff was practically forbidden to leave US soil for national security reasons.

So what's actually changing? Anduril, which specializes in smart weapons and autonomous drones, is essentially saying that technical expertise and production are no longer an American monopoly. If Europe has the talent pool (spoiler: it does), why not build there?

Now, don't expect weapons factories to pop up across Europe next month. There are still laws, international treaties, and trade agreements that heavily regulate this stuff. But the signal is unmistakable: defense supply chains are going global, just like everything else. Except with slightly more serious consequences when you're talking about weapons systems.

This isn't flashy news — it won't change your morning. But it's a telling sign that the old model of American-controlled defense manufacturing is slowly cracking. Companies flow toward talent and opportunity, regardless of which flag hangs above the factory.
