Microsoft layoffs: 4,800 jobs cut, Xbox and sales hit

Turns out even software giants need to do some "spring cleaning," or at least that's what they call it. Microsoft laid off approximately 4,800 employees, about 2.1% of its workforce, at the start of its new financial year. Imagine the surprise for those who thought they were safe in the realm of Windows and Xbox.

The cuts primarily hit commercial sales-the folks trying to convince us to buy license after license-and the Xbox division. Yes, you heard that right; even the console that brings us hours of fun isn't immune to corporate logic. Maybe we haven't been buying enough Game Pass?

"Efficiency" is the magic word that pops up when companies mean "do more with fewer people." About a year after cutting around 9,100 employees, Microsoft implemented further layoffs at the beginning of its new fiscal year to streamline operations. Sounds like a broken record, doesn't it?

These reductions are part of a broader strategy to maintain high-profit margins, even if it means thinning the ranks. After all, shareholders always want growing numbers, and sometimes cutting costs is the only solution. It's the same old merry-go-round, with a few fewer seats each time around.
