Less AI is More: When You Should Skip Artificial Intelligence

AI hallucinations are the new nightmare of developers. A model that looks brilliant in a demo can regularly fabricate answers, confuse facts, or produce code that doesn't work. The problem? It does this with such confidence that you look crazy when you push back: "But the model was almost certain..." Spoiler: it wasn't.

The "Principle of Least AI" is simply this: before adding a language model to your project, ask yourself if you actually need one. Often the answer is no. A well-written regex, sensible conditional logic, or a simple database lookup does the job better and without surprises. AI isn't a magic hammer that turns every screw into a nail.

Let's take a concrete example: you want to classify user input into categories. First instinct? Throw an LLM at it. Realistic solution? A handful of hardcoded rules with fuzzy matching might do the trick, cost less, and won't fail randomly. AI makes sense when the problem is genuinely complex and nuanced. Not when a decision tree would do the same job.

The real hidden cost of AI isn't just computational. There's latency (models are slow), debugging nightmares (how do you explain to a client why the model screwed up?), and dependency: one day the API changes, the provider goes under, or the model updates and everything breaks. A simple system doesn't have these problems.

This doesn't mean demonizing AI. There are cases where it genuinely shines: complex text analysis, creative generation, pattern detection on massive datasets. But the real intelligence (irony intended) is knowing when not to use it. The developers who build the most robust and reliable systems tomorrow will be those who learned this lesson today.
