Meta Decides To Just Make Up Its Own Fake News (Using AI)

Facebook has always been crawling with clickbait articles, penned by actual humans (sadly). Now, Meta has taken a giant leap forward and apparently thought: “Why pay people to write garbage when a machine can churn it out without bothering to pay anyone?” So, in the “For You” section of the Meta AI app, you'll find completely synthetic stories – topics, images, text, the whole kit and caboodle, all cooked up by AI.

The kicker? It’s not even hidden. It’s literally a news feed that isn’t news. It’s like Meta is saying, “Look, we know people want clickbait. We know people want weird, absurd stories. So, we’ll just generate them ourselves, no middleman required.”

The real issue here isn’t the tech – generating text and images with AI is old hat by now. The problem is the why. Why deliberately fill a space with made-up content? Why no filtering, no fact-checking, no curation? The answer is simple: engagement. The more you read, the more time you spend in the app, the more data they collect on you, the more ads they can charge for. It’s the same old game, just with fewer human players.

And no, this isn’t about “content quality.” Meta isn’t even pretending these articles are real. It’s pure algorithmic entertainment – your personalized feed of stories that will never happen, but could suck you in for five minutes. Think an endless scroll of beautifully packaged hogwash.

Another little gem: users don’t always realize they’re reading AI-generated fluff. And that’s where things get truly uncomfortable. If you know you’re reading fiction, fine, that’s a conscious choice. But if you think you’re getting real news and it’s actually AI-generated clickbait? Well, that’s a whole different ballgame.

So yeah, Meta has found yet another way to squeeze even more wasted time out of us. Not bad for a company that already pretty much wrote the rulebook on this game.
