Mistral AI Raises €3 Billion: Europe's AI Bet Against US Dominance

We're talking about €3 billion (roughly $3.5 billion) that Mistral is raising in what looks like a significant funding round. By the numbers alone, it's impressive: two years ago almost nobody knew who they were, today they're one of Europe's biggest bets on staying relevant in AI.

The context is essentially a tech arms race. OpenAI, Google, Meta are spending obscene amounts of money on training models that get bigger and more powerful by the month. In the US and China, cash flows like water. Europe, historically more cautious and regulation-happy, risks falling behind. Mistral is Europe's hope that the old continent can actually compete without taking a step back.

What makes Mistral interesting is its philosophy: powerful but efficient models, accessible through an open-source approach that's not exactly OpenAI's closed-garden strategy.
