Odysseus: The Self-Hosted AI Workspace ChatGPT Doesn't Want You to Know About

Odysseus is one of those projects that makes you think: "Why didn't someone build this sooner?" It's essentially the self-hosted, open-source version of ChatGPT or Claude—but without having to sign away your privacy rights.

The core features are solid. You get a chat that works with any local model (via Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM) or remote ones (OpenAI, OpenRouter). Then comes the interesting part: agents. Equip them with tools (web, files, shell, memory) and they self-organize to complete the task. This isn't just "generate text"—it's stuff that actually does things.

But wait, there's more. Deep Research gathers sources, reads them, and synthesizes everything into a visual report—like what premium services do, but on your hardware. Compare lets you test different models side-by-side without bias. And here's an underrated feature: the Documents section where you write and AI assists, not the other way around. Rare idea, honestly.

Everything else is organized like you'd expect from a serious workspace: email with IMAP/SMTP and automatic triage, notes and tasks with reminders, calendar with CalDAV sync (Nextcloud, Apple, Fastmail), persistent memory that evolves agents over time. Works great on mobile too—it's a PWA.

Setup is painless: Docker (recommended) or Python 3.11+. Clone the repo, run docker-compose up, and in two minutes you're live on localhost:7000. Defaults work out of the box, then you configure models and services in Settings.

The elephant in the room? It's still young (v1.0), has 151 open issues and 270 pull requests. Not something to rush into production with tomorrow, but the code exists, it's actively maintained, and the founder (pewdiepie-archdaemon—weird name, whatever) is serious about the project. Supports GPU on Linux; macOS with Apple Silicon remains a bit iffy with Docker for now.
