OpenAI Launches Operator: The AI Agent That Browses the Web So You Don't Have To

Meet Operator, OpenAI's shiny new toy: an AI agent that can open your browser, hunt down restaurants, book tables, wrestle with forms, and do whatever tedious stuff you'd normally do online—minus the part where you forget your password for the hundredth time.

It runs on GPT-4 and uses something called a "Computer-Using Agent" (CUA), which is fancy talk for "an AI that can see your screen, click buttons, and type in boxes like a virtual assistant with actual hands."

Right now it's only for ChatGPT Pro subscribers (the folks dropping $200 a month) and it's US-only. OpenAI swears it'll learn from your browsing habits to get smarter over time, which—let's be honest—is a bit unsettling if you think about it for more than five seconds.

What's it good for? Booking flights, ordering takeout, filling out bureaucratic nightmares without losing your mind. The catch? You're literally giving it access to your data, your credit cards, and basically your entire digital privacy.

Anthhropic's already doing something similar with Claude (it can hijack your whole computer), and now everyone wants their own personal AI sidekick. The real question: do you actually trust it?
