Reachy Mini goes fully local (and ditches the internet)

Until recently, Reachy Mini (a cute little humanoid robot with articulated arms that looks like something from a modest sci-fi film) had to call home to cloud servers to handle conversations. Not anymore: everything runs locally on the robot itself, thanks to lightweight language models optimized to run on modest hardware.

The point isn't just privacy—though sure, it's nice that your robot won't broadcast every conversation to the internet. It's about speed and reliability. No more latency, no more depending on that Wi-Fi connection that decides to take a break exactly when you need it. The robot responds instantly, like something standing right in front of you actually should.

Technically, what they did was embed optimized AI models directly on the robot. These aren't the enormous models running on OpenAI or Google's servers: they're lean, snappy versions that can chat intelligently without needing permission from anyone. Think of it as having a smartphone brain instead of a supercomputer brain.

This move comes while the tech world is obsessed with "AI in the cloud." Reachy Mini says: thanks, but we'd rather it work here and now. And honestly, when your robotic assistant is literally within arm's reach, there's no sense in sending it on a round trip around the world to think.
