Flight Safety: AI Spots Pilot Errors Before It's Too Late

A landing is an operation demanding perfect coordination and lightning-fast reactions. Flight instructors must anticipate student errors almost impossibly early, as if they didn't already have enough stress on board. Every second counts, and an unstable approach can turn into a serious problem in a blink.

The issue is that an unstable approach isn't always easy to spot immediately, especially for a student. A new artificial intelligence model, developed for a flight simulator, aims to give instructors more time to act. The idea is simple: if the AI warns them early, the instructor can intervene before the situation truly goes south.

The AI analyzes real-time flight data, such as altitude, airspeed, aircraft attitude, and vertical speed. It performs a kind of digital blood test to figure out when things are about to go wrong. Essentially, it's like a virtual co-pilot always keeping an eye on the dashboard and another on your face, but without the judgment.

The model was trained using data from a Python-based flight simulator configured for a Cessna 172 aircraft. This allows it to recognize patterns indicating an unstable approach. Specifically, the system can identify an unstable approach up to 15 seconds in advance, which is an eternity when you're airborne.
