Siri Won't Be Your AI Girlfriend (And Apple Is Right)

Here's the thing: most modern chatbots — the ones from OpenAI, Google, and their friends — are built to be delightfully charming. They respond with a flattering tone, thank you for your questions, seem genuinely thrilled to hang out with you. It's like talking to a coworker who nods at everything you say and laughs at every joke, even the terrible ones. Nice? Maybe. Natural? Absolutely not.

Apple went a different route. According to Federighi, the new Siri will be more, let's say, straightforward. Less "oh, what an interesting question!" and more "here's your answer." It's a deliberate design choice, not a bug. The idea is that an assistant should be useful, not a simulation of friendship. If you ask Siri what time it is, it doesn't need to thank you for the privilege.

There's psychology behind all this, and it's not what it seems. Interactions that are too "friendly" and parasocial with AI assistants create an illusion of a relationship that doesn't exist. It's like when a store calls you by your first name — feels personal, but it's really just marketing. Apple says: not us. We're offering you a tool, not a simulation of companionship.

The contrast is stark. Ask certain chatbots to do something slightly outside the box and watch the linguistic contortions: "oh, what a fascinating question!", "I'm honored to help you", "allow me to explore this topic with you." It's exhausting. Siri, on the other hand, expects to be treated like what it is: software that's good at its job, but not interested in building a fake relationship with you.

There's also an accountability angle. If people start seeing AI assistants as friends or wise gurus, they might start trusting them in ways they shouldn't. An AI that knows its place — which is as a tool, not a person — is paradoxically safer and psychologically healthier. Less romance, less delusion.

Bottom line: Apple is saying something surprisingly wise. Artificial intelligence doesn't need to be charming and flattering to be useful. Sometimes, humility in design is the rarest luxury.
