SpaceX governance: missing out on gains for 'box-checking'?

Many investors, especially those who love strict rules and pristine balance sheets, aren't thrilled with how SpaceX is run. Often, the "problem" is Elon Musk himself, with his unconventional leadership style and hands-on approach to every detail.

For these funds, the rocket and satellite company has some "governance qualms." It's privately held, meaning less transparent than public companies, and decisions seem to heavily revolve around its founder. This approach doesn't sit well with the rigid criteria of certain investors, who prefer more "institutional" and predictable businesses.

According to Aniket Shah, a Jefferies analyst, yes, they are sacrificing too much money. Shah stated on August 2, 2026, that criticism of Space Exploration Technologies Corp.'s governance is "simple-minded." He argues that those blacklisting SpaceX for these reasons are too hung up on corporate "box-checking."

This mindset, Shah suggests, risks depriving investors of substantial long-term financial gains. Essentially, they're so focused on formal details that they miss the bigger picture: SpaceX is, quite literally, exploring new frontiers and holds immense economic potential. It's like refusing to buy Apple stock because Steve Jobs didn't wear a suit.
