SpaceX Wants to Put Data Centers in Space (And Make $300 Billion Doing It)

The idea isn't as crazy as it sounds. Orbital data centers would have one massive advantage: ridiculously low latency. If your server is 500 km above Earth instead of on the opposite side of the planet, data travels faster. For applications demanding extreme speed — high-frequency trading, competitive gaming, real-time processing — this could be genuinely transformative.

According to Winton's math, SpaceX could deploy tens of gigawatts of processing capacity in orbit by the late 2020s. At current rental rates, you're looking at numbers that would make Amazon Web Services blush. It's the kind of figure that makes traditional data center profits look like spare change.

Of course, there are minor technical details to sort out. How do you cool a server running at insane temperatures in space? How do you keep it in stable orbit? What happens if the whole thing falls on Siberia? Small stuff, really. Winton seems confident SpaceX can handle it, given they're already launching thousands of satellites like they're in some sci-fi arms race.

The real genius move? SpaceX isn't inventing the data center. It's relocating existing infrastructure to a place where no competitor can follow. It's geographic monopoly, but literally in space. Everyone else can complain, but they can't compete at 500 km altitude.

That said, take the numbers with some skepticism. These are optimistic projections based on current pricing and technology that doesn't yet exist commercially. But the core idea holds up: ultra-low latency is infinitely rare in tech, and if you can reliably deliver it, people will pay for it.
