Synopsys Controls 99% of Chips. And Says So Without Shame.

Sassine Ghazi, Synopsys's CEO, said something unsettling during a tech conference in New York: no chip can be designed today without their software. Not "most," not "almost all." Zero. Coming from anyone else, it would sound like bragging, but when the head of a tens-of-billions-dollar company says it, it lands more like a statement of fact.

And honestly, he's right. Synopsys makes software for designing integrated circuits—the kind of stuff Intel, ARM, TSMC, and Qualcomm use when they're cooking up the chips inside your phone, laptop, and allegedly intelligent fridge. It's not hyperbole to say Synopsys is the gatekeeper of the semiconductor revolution.

But here's where it gets spicy. Last year, Synopsys bought Ansys, another software company specializing in engineering and simulation. Imagine owning not just the key to the door, but also the instruction manual for building the door itself. Now Synopsys can help engineers design chips using even more advanced simulation tools, making themselves even harder to avoid. It's like a company that already owned the market decided to become unsinkable.

All of this happens while AI is exploding everywhere. Designing chips for AI is a monumental challenge: you need to squeeze every nanometer, every watt. AI chips are as complex as they come, and Synopsys is midwifing their birth. Ghazi basically said it out loud: modern AI wouldn't be booming without their software running in the background.

The inevitable question: how do the others feel? When a single company tells you that you're completely dependent on them, that's comfortable for them and potentially sketchy for everyone else. But as long as the chips coming out of their software outperform the competition's—and right now they do—nobody has much choice.
