The concept is clean: feed the model a text description ('cylinder 10mm diameter, 25mm height, with V-groove') and get back a STEP or STL file ready for your CNC. No mechanical engineer required, no learning the insane keyboard shortcuts in AutoCAD, no suffering.

The most interesting GitHub projects are combining language models (the things powering ChatGPT) with geometry-specific algorithms. Some generate OpenSCAD code (a programming language for 3D modeling), others create parametric geometry straight up that you can tweak on the fly. Like having an assistant who takes notes at superhuman speed.

The catch? It's in the details—literally. A simple cylinder is easy. But tell it 'a support bracket with tight tolerances and beveled edges to avoid sharp edges,' and the model starts sweating. Most projects handle basic shapes fine, but they choke spectacularly on complex surfaces, multi-part assemblies, or when millimeter precision matters.

Another roadblock: language itself. Saying 'I want something kind of like this' doesn't cut it. You need to be precise, almost like coding. Ironically, anyone good at describing things clearly could probably just learn OpenSCAD without much hassle.

That said, the potential is legit. Small manufacturers, makers, startups prototyping fast—they could actually save serious time on initial sketches. And the GitHub devs aren't giving up: new models trained on real engineering drawings are actually improving noticeably.
