Trump isn't bluffing randomly. Several European countries, including France and Italy, introduced digital services taxes to make big tech pay their fair share locally. American giants like Google, Meta, and Amazon rake in billions across Europe while paying minimal taxes there. Europe said: enough. Trump heard and reacted exactly as expected: maximum pressure.

The timing is brutal. Multiple European nations just ratified a fresh trade deal with Washington, thinking they'd settled things. Now the rug's being pulled out.

It's straightforward: if Amazon bills 10 billion in Italy, it pays tax there too, not just in the US. France launched a 3% digital tax on digital service revenues in 2019, others followed. It's nearly standard VAT level. Yet for American tech firms, it feels like banning profit itself.

Trump sees this as a direct attack on American companies. He's promised heavy tariffs: 100% means European goods enter the US at double price, making them unsellable. It's maximum trade warfare without actual embargoes.

If Trump follows through, Europe's got trouble. A trade war hurts both sides, but European companies (cars, luxury, tech) export heavily to the US and suffer more. Short-term?
