Windsurf Editor: Codeium Launches the Anti-Cursor with Cooperative AI

Windsurf is Codeium's answer to Cursor: a code editor (basically a VSCode fork) with AI baked in that writes, tweaks, and debugs code on the fly. The pitch? Codeium is all about "cooperative AI" instead of "generative AI"—meaning you write the code, the AI suggests and autocompletes, but doesn't just take over your keyboard and run off with it.

What's it actually do? Inline completions (think Copilot), a chat sidebar for explanations and debugging, automatic refactoring, and something called "Cascade mode" where you can edit multiple files at once just by describing the feature you want.

So what's the deal versus Cursor? It's free. At least right now. Codeium makes its money from enterprise plans, but if you're just a solo dev, the editor costs you absolutely nothing. Bonus: it plays nice with open-source models (Llama, Mistral) if you want to run everything locally and keep your code off the cloud.

The catch? It's younger than Cursor, which means fewer features and the occasional rough edge. The AI quality isn't quite at the Claude/GPT-4 level yet (that's what Cursor gets), but it's improving fast enough that you'll notice.
